⚡Are you willing to pay for your own business trip?
🧠 Recently many people reached out to me for advice on how to progress in their career/business. They wanted to move up because they felt there was a plateau in their career especially during the economic downturn.
⌛ This reminded me of my candidate who asked me for career advice 2 years ago.
⏰ She wanted to be promoted, having stayed in her current role for 6 years. We had a brainstorming session to explore different ways to increase her income/accelerate her career.
🌍 She was a sales/account manager and I asked her where her biggest clients came from.
She said Singapore, Shanghai, New York and London. I encouraged her to fly to those countries to expand her network internally and externally.
💸 She hesitated because her company would not sponsor her business trips and she did not want to pay out of her own pocket.
💸 Her reasoning was that she did not want to spend HK$40k (Flights + Hotels) making a trip, not knowing whether it would yield results or not.
🔴 She could not predict what the ROI was.
💡 How much does flight tickets in Singapore, Shanghai, New York and London cost?
Maybe HK$30k to 50k in total if she were to go to all 4 countries.
💡 Does this trip guarantee you a return?
Not sure, but it will definitely buy you a chance of expanding your clients/visibility or even make more revenue/commission.
💡 If you are willing to pay for your holidays just to have fun, why don't you treat your business trip as a holiday and even better - it might bring you a chance to scale up your business/salary/promotion.
✅ How about you?
✅ Would you pay out of your pocket for your business trips?
✅ How do you invest in yourself?
✅ How much do you set aside to invest in yourself every year?
✅ If you notice that you are plateauing in your career, what would you do?
