Every morning, I like to stop by different coffee shops in Central to read before heading to work.
☕ Today, I arrived a little earlier than usual and bumped into a cleaning lady I often chat with.
As we spoke, she shared something that struck me deeply: she now works two jobs just to make ends meet.
She told me she used to earn HK$28k a month working 10 hours a day, Monday to Friday, at a restaurant in Central.
But when the restaurant closed, she found another job nearby.
💰 This time earning HK$18k a month for 8 hours a day.
To cover the gap, she had to take on an additional part‑time job after work.
Even though she works more hours now, she still can’t reach her previous income.
With a sigh, she said: “The economy is getting worse.”
I agreed but at the same time, I felt grateful that we are still able to earn.
And it made me reflect on my own perspective:
👉 For me, as long as my passive income covers my monthly expenses, I feel content
👉 My elder brother disagrees, reminding me that inflation will eat away at savings
👉 But my belief is simple: “If you always think a certain amount is never enough, no matter how much you earn, you’ll still feel it’s never enough.”
👉 It also teaches me to invest early on so I don't need to sell more hours to work as I age
✨ Takeaway
This conversation reminded me that “enough” looks different for everyone.
For some, it’s financial security.
For others, it’s freedom, time, or peace of mind.
