📝 What skills can you sell apart from your job?
With job insecurities so common, sometimes it pushes me to think ahead.
I have already witnessed more than 4 rounds of layoffs globally in my past 9 years of working.
🌎 The cycles are getting shorter and shorter.
💫 We need to be more and more adaptive to changes.
The first two rounds happened during COVID especially in the retail, hospitality and tourism industries.
The third and forth rounds are happening now
After COVID, the world economy is shrinking and companies realise that they don't require that many headcount.
☀️ Two items that came to my mind if I were laid off next day:
1) Can I take on freelance work? Are my skills still in demand?
✏️ Apart from my job or jumping to another role, what else can I offer?
✏️ What skills can I sell?
✏️ How can I build on my personal brand if I can no longer rely on my company's brand?
✏️ Do my clients remember me as Nicole Hui or which companies I came from?
2) How do I cover my expenses 💸 ?
Fortunately I paid off my mortgage so I need to think of ways to cover my monthly expenses.
My monthly expenses are around HK$14k - 18k depending on how much I buy...
and how much I am going to pay my parents
Realistic ideas such as
🔺Be a barista
🔺Be a private tutor
🔺Sell my used items
🔺Be a yoga teacher
🔺Be a personal trainer
I realise after coming up with these back up plans, I feel less stressed.
✅ How about you?
✅ What do you plan to do if you were laid off next day?
✅ How do you destress?
✅ How do you plan to shift your focus from your pay check to other areas?
