Time flies!
It’s hard to believe it’s been a year !!!
Since I started posting career advice regularly on LinkedIn
While journaling last night, a question popped into my head:
💡 Is being a first mover a smart or silly move?
When I started, I was one of the first recruiters in Hong Kong to post consistently and openly about the job market, career tips, and personal reflections.
✅ The Advantage:
- People remember me. I became “that recruiter on LinkedIn in Hong Kong”
- The algorithm favours consistency
(my early momentum helped me build and sustain engagement)
- I’ve built a loyal audience who trusts my voice
❌ The Disadvantage:
- Some peers (recruiters and non-recruiters alike) who once criticized me… now copy my strategy
- The more engagement I get, the more my ideas get copied.
- I spend extra time brainstorming fresh content because originality is harder when others are free-riding.
Sometimes I wonder if being a first mover is a smart strategy or moving later is better?
I was listening to a business podcast that it is always profitable to copy existing business that brings in revenue rather than starting a new business because there is a high risk of failing.
This is an interesting question that I would like to listen from the audience too
