🏨 Staying at the Same Hotel I Did 10 Years Ago: Regression or Inflation?

I love reading personal finance books.
📚 I’ve often found inspiration in wealth creation and financial freedom.
These books always emphasise two elements:
1. Setting Specific Goals
2. Creating a Vision Board
🖼️ I still vividly remember my vision board, which included aspirations like:
- Travelling in business class
- Staying in five-star hotels
- Building a fulfilling career (so I never have to retire)
- Establishing a named scholarship at my university
⏰ Fast forward to today
I was planning my upcoming trips
💳 Since I recently switched to a miles credit card,
This allowed me to redeem flights, allowing me to splurge more on hotels.
However, when I checked the price of the same hotel I stayed at 10 years ago as
a fresh graduate.
I was quite surprised.
Ten years ago, it cost about HK$800 a night.
Today?
A staggering HK$1,300.
This revelation left me reflecting deeply. Even with a salary increase & promotions, I found myself slightly frustrated.
❓ I asked myself:
Is inflation outpacing my financial growth, or have I somehow regressed?
I thought I could afford to book a fancier hotel than 10 years ago with my increased income.
📝 However, it seems like I could not catch up as quickly as inflation.
Have you ever felt this way before?
Even though you make more income, your lifestyle did not change that much?
