💬 Is purely pursuing happiness right or wrong using your parents’ money?

ree

🍵 Last weekend I went to yum cha with my parents and our family friends.

My family friends’ son is the same age as me but we have different paths.

I followed the traditional path of graduating at 22 years old and been working since then.

🛍 Because I need to pay my bills and I also enjoy working.

While my family friend’s son just graduated this year after his Bachelor + Master + PhD.

🏥 I thought he was planning to be a professor since he kept studying for Doctorate.

🎨 But he replied that he planned to be a painter after his PhD/Doctorate graduation this month.

I was really shocked because I wondered:

If you didn’t enjoy your Philosophy degree then why bother spending 9 years studying and changing your career path to be a painter?

💸 Isn't it a waste of your parents’ money and your own time?

(Unless you fund your own 1-year Master + 4-years PhD education)

🖼 Why not be a painter after the bachelor degree or even younger?

I shared my thoughts with my dad after lunch as I was frustrated.

I believe it is a waste of money and talent.

However, I respect and admire those who worked for a few years, earned their money to fund their further education and change career paths because they entered the workforce.

👩‍💻 My dad disagreed with me because he said

our family friends are financially sufficient enough to pay for their sons’ tuition and

🏠 they would pass on a property and a lump sum to him after they pass away.

They are free to do whatever they wish with their son and money.

My dad said I did not have the right to judge.

This leads me to wonder - should parents pay for everything for their kids?

⚡ If you pay for everything, will your kids/adults learn to be independent?

⚡ If you know your parents will pass you their properties and money soon, will you still work today?

What will you do?
