I am happy to meet with young and smart people such as Herman who also interned at Deutsche Bank.Â
đ„đ Back at Deutsche in my year, I had to wake up at 6am to buy breakfast for my team.Â
But in Herman's year, he did not have to do that!Â
Why wasn't I born a few years later!!!! (I also think it had to do with different teams)
We discussed the banking job market and he shared with me how he landed his job at JP Morgan upon graduation.Â
I wanted to share his 3 tips with you all:
â Stage 1: Pre-Job Application
When Herman was studying undergrad, he had a low GPA and his major was non-Finance.Â
But he realised in order to get a job offer at one of the Bulge Brackets, he must have the top 1% CV to stand out.
Instead of highlighting all his achievements, he rewrote his CV and only kept relevant achievements such as attending all the campus events and Insight Days.Â
He tailor made his cover letter with customised insights and experience relevant to the department he was going for.Â
He performed really well on the Insight Day.Â
Hence when he applied for a role there, the HR recognised his name and recommended his profile to the hiring manager.
â Stage 2: InterviewÂ
During interview, Herman would position himself as a loyal and fit candidate for the role.Â
Interviewers usually will not hire the most aggressive candidate because they know they might leave the firm quickly for other opportunities (unless it is a sales role)
The art lies in how to appear as the best candidate while demonstrating that you are also a loyal candidate.Â
â Stage 3: Shine during the internship
Back in Herman's year, JP hired 5 interns in the transaction banking department and they would usually give out 2-3 return offers.
All the 5 interns were strong academically and they handed in quality work.
Herman said in order to have a higher chance of winning, he needed to find his own edge and increase his visibility in front of the MDs.Â
â He would arrange coffee with the Director/MD and appear to be an interesting person in front of them.
â ïž He also performed magic tricks when it comes to parties among colleagues to show the other side of himself outside of work.
I hope the students find these advice useful and this would help you in your future job application no matter what industries you are going for!
