🔥 Pivoting from a single product specialist to multi-asset expert within Private Bank

This article is for those who wish to have a career transition within the same industry but different focus!

☕ I had a great time catching up with Muska Chiu – Head of Investment Advisory at Standard Chartered Private Bank HK. 

I haven’t seen Muska for many years after I left Citi Private Bank in 2017.

When I first met Muska at Citi, he was a Fixed Income Head.

⌛ Fast Forward 7 years later, he became an Investment Advisory Head, leading a big team of experienced IAs! 

That was a big change for him especially it is not always easy to pivot from one role to another.

✨ Shifting roles not only meant he had to have in depth knowledge about other asset classes, but also he had a short period of time to master the skills of sales and people management. 

I asked Muska what was the most challenging part of pivoting. 

He said 

✨ “using a short period of time to build up reputation and credibility” was the most challenging.✨

I asked him for 3 TIPS to have a successful career pivot:

🔴 Hard work is the foundation

🔴 Collaborate with others and create a Win-Win Situation 

🔴 When you face hurdles, you need to have faith in yourself, and the courage to challenge the status quo to come up with new ways

What I remember vividly during my coffee chat with Muska was his quote of 

📝 “Luck is not a pure result of probability – It was based on consistent hard work and dedication.” 

We need to be intentional with our career choices and plannings. If we want to progress, we need to step out of comfort zone and have the courage to change.
