🏦 Recently Hang Seng announced a new way of restructuring
Rather than asking you to leave directly, they would ask you to reapply to your current position along with other external candidates
🏋♂️ Not just Hang Seng, when I went to the gym yesterday, I ran into three of my friends.
1. One worked at an insurance firm back office team
2. Another worked as a Partner at an international law firm
3. Another worked at a bank which the whole department was outsourced to India
All were being let go recently
🌏 It seems the global economy still takes time to recover
But I want to write this post to encourage people not to give up
💡 Yes - Restructuring is getting more and more common.
But sometimes it wasn’t about your performance.
🧭 It could be a business decision to exit a certain market or
Replacing candidates at a cheaper cost in another country
🤳 Don’t take it personally and blame yourself
This will cause a lot of mental problems if you keep blaming yourself
🧠 As I have witnessed some of the candidates had a mental breakdown
Because they used to be high flyers and thought they had the world but got let go in the end
🪜 I understand the stress of not having a job
Especially when you have
- mortgage
- kids
- ageing parents to care for
✍ After all we have bills to pay
At the same time, I have learnt to adjust my mindset to:
- I could be replaced any time
- I need to think of ways to move on and think positive about the future
- I need to think of ways to make money outside my job
- I need to accept the reality that some roles will be gone and the general environment is not doing well. I might need to be more flexible in my job search
📩 Always remember:
Be flexible in your job search
There are always different ways of making money
🧰 There are always different jobs waiting for you if you don’t mind having a pay
cut or industry change
Don’t let restructuring affect your confidence and always stand back up after you fall down!
