đź’ˇ Your Second Career: When Should You Start Thinking About It?

Over the Easter holidays, I stayed in Hong Kong and finally had time to slow down, reflect, and binge a few Netflix shows 🍿.
One that really struck me was Final Draft
The TV show is about a Japanese competition where retired elite athletes compete for funding to start their “second career.”
What hit me was how short their earning power really is.
Many retire in their 30s, and suddenly their income drops drastically.
Some became barbers, movers, or took jobs far removed from their glory days.
And then I thought: isn’t this similar to white‑collar careers too?
Oracle just recently fired 30,000 employees via an email.
Even though the official retirement age is 60–65, many professionals are being forced out much earlier.
Sometimes in their 40s, due to AI, restructuring, and outsourcing.
You might even need to take a pay cut in your next role.
Ironically, the more senior and expensive you are, the more vulnerable you become.
Watching that show reminded me of one thing:
We all need to prepare for a second career.
Now.
🌱 Whether it’s building passive income, learning new skills, or exploring side projects, the earlier we plant seeds, the more options we’ll have when change inevitably comes.
✨ My takeaway:
Don’t wait until retirement is forced upon you.
Start shaping your second career while you still have the freedom to choose
Start preparing before we all receive the restructuring email.
What about you?
Have you started thinking about your second career yet? đź’¬
