🚀 Who Controls Your Career?

This was the question I was asked during my recent talk at the HKU Master Class.
It reminded me of Mel Robbins’ book “Let Them”.
She makes a powerful point:
If you rely only on your current job and do nothing else, then your boss and your company are the ones controlling your career.
But if you:
- Keep upgrading your skills,
- Keep interviewing to explore what’s out there,
- Keep networking to expand your opportunities…
👉 Then you are the one in control of your career
I always hear candidates' frustration about careers.
I feel frustrated too.
The economy isn’t improving as fast as we’d like.
AI is advancing, replacing many white-collar jobs.
Promotions and job security are harder to come by.
The ROI of staying loyal to one company isn’t what it used to be.
Back in the 90s and 00s, loyalty often meant guaranteed promotions and stability because the economy was booming.
Today, things are different.
So what can we do?
✨ Control the controllables
✨ Take ACTIONS!
Increase your competitiveness. Create more opportunities.
Accept what you cannot control: the economy, restructuring, or market cycles.
I try to take control of my career by
- networking with people from different industries
- investing my salary into passive income so if my role got restructured, I will not be in panic
