In my previous article, I mentioned the practical steps of preparing oneself in case there is a lay off.
In this article, I wanted to share what my classmates/friends did when they were informed of their redundancy.
Friend A worked at the middle office at a European Bank and was laid off. He went crazy and could not accept the fact that at age 32 years old, he was being let go while getting paid decently of about HK$100k + monthly. He panicked and complained a lot and freaked away. We all had to calm him down.
Friend B and C were from the investment banking division - the highly paid ones yet with super long hours. They already sensed it a few months ago and hence when they were officially informed of the restructuring last week, they were quite calm about it.
Don't take it personally when it comes to firing. It could be corporate strategy to exit a business instead of your individual performance
2-3 Days after they were informed of their last day, Friend B is being super proactive. He drafted an excel with all the contacts that he needs to reach out to in order to secure a job in Hong Kong. His excel lists out how many people he will talk to daily and track his progress.
I was so impressed and motivated by him that he motivates me to film more youtube videos, write more weekly articles and work harder at my job and side hustle.
You never know when you will be let go. It is always good to prepare for a back up plan, such as another job offer while building your side hustle.
Do you have any friends being laid off recently in the banking/other industries? If yes, how do they cope with it?
