Breaking into the Upper Class 🥂

I had an interesting conversation with my senior recently.
He's 35 years old and works at a PE firm.
We grabbed coffee to catch up on careers and life.
I asked him a simple question:
"So... what's your next goal? Another promotion?"
His answer genuinely surprised me.
He said he's no longer interested in getting promoted.
Instead he's trying to break into the upper class.
His logic:
He can already afford to fully pay for a 3-bedroom apartment on HK Island.
But he knows that relying on his salary (no matter how high it gets) will never get him to his definition of "upper class."
A salary makes you comfortable.
It doesn't make you wealthy.
He's single, no kids.
While people his age are worried about keeping their jobs, his mindset is completely different from his peers.
Part of it, I think, is that without kids he can keep his expenses low and has the mental space to think about what's next.
Honestly? It's rare for me to hear "breaking into the upper class" as a goal.
Usually my friends say:
🔹 "Another promotion"
🔹 "Launch my own business"
🔹 "Financial freedom"
But that's the fun part of having conversations with different people.
You hear different answers every day.
And you learn something new every day 💡
And I think that's why I love being a recruiter...
How about you? 👇
What's YOUR next goal — promotion, business, financial freedom... or something else entirely?
And do you think a salary alone can ever get you to the "upper class"?
