🌟 Why Being the Best in Your Industry Matters

One of the most common questions I hear from candidates is:
“How can I get paid more?”
The truth is, changing jobs might give you a 10–20% salary bump.
But if you want to be paid at the very top, you need to be the best or the most well‑known in your industry.
Recently, I revisited Seth Godin’s classic book The Dip.
He points out that the top 1% of earners in any field often make 10 times more than the average person.
That’s why it pays to focus on what you’re truly great at.
📊 Examples are everywhere:
- A CFO at a Hong Kong listed company can earn 10x more than a CFO at a GEM board or private company.
- The most famous movie star earns 100x more than an average actor.
The principle is the same: the market rewards excellence and visibility.
So instead of only asking “How can I get paid more?”
Ask yourself:
🤔 How can I become the best in my industry?
📈 What skills or expertise set me apart?
🌍 How can I build a reputation that lasts?
Because when you’re at the top, opportunities and rewards multiply.
✨ My takeaway: Don’t just chase increments.
Strive for mastery, visibility, and impact. That’s how you unlock the real upside.
