🤖 What Should We Learn If We Don’t Want to Be Replaced by AI?

This is the question I hear everywhere
From career talks to education panels
Yesterday, I spoke with recent graduates at CUHK.
Many wanted to know about the job market and how to land better opportunities.
But underneath it all, there was one big worry:
“Will AI replace my job?”
In the past, the answer was simple: Learn coding
⏰ Fast forward five years, and now tools like ChatGPT can code faster than most humans.
So what’s next?
Honestly, I don’t have a neat answer.
And I haven’t heard anyone give one that feels complete.
But here’s how I think about it:
1️⃣ The Meaning of Work
If AI replaces 50% of jobs, what happens to the meaning of life without a career?
Traditionally, people only faced this question at retirement age—around 60.
But restructuring and automation are pushing that “retirement” age down to 50, maybe even the late 40s.
If humans live to 100, how do we spend the second half of our lives without paid work?
That’s not just an economic issue
It’s a philosophical question we’ll all need to wrestle with.
2️⃣ Making Money Without a Job
Since no skill guarantees job security anymore, the best safeguard is to learn how to make money without relying on a traditional job.
Corporations build AI to cut labor costs. Employees, in turn, need to build resilience by developing income‑generating skills outside the corporate system—whether that’s entrepreneurship, investing, or creating value in new ways.
💡 My Takeaway
The future isn’t about learning one “magic skill” to beat AI.
It’s about:
- Redefining the meaning of work.
- Building the ability to generate value and income independently.
- Preparing for a world where careers may not last a lifetime, but human creativity and adaptability will.
