I’m a big fan of The Last of Us (a PS4 zombie game that had me hooked for hours).
So when HBO announced the TV adaptation, I was thrilled!
Season 1? Meh.
But I held out hope for Season 2.
Last night, I watched the first episode of the new season.
It was... painfully boring.
That’s when it hit me: the sunk cost fallacy.
Is there right or wrong when it comes to sunk cost?
🎬 The Movie Analogy
Back in my Economics class, my professor posed a simple question:
If you’re halfway through a terrible movie at the cinema, do you stay just because you paid for the ticket?
Or do you walk out and reclaim your time?
The wiser choice? Walk out.
The money’s already spent.
Staying only wastes more time.
How about when we apply this concept to our careers and dating?
🩷 Dating:
Now imagine dating someone for 10 years.
You’re not moving toward marriage.
Do you stay because you’ve already invested so much time?
Or do you leave and open yourself to something better?
My mom would say: “You’ve already spent 10 years. Don’t throw it away.”
My dad? “Cut your losses. Use the next 10 years to find someone who’s truly aligned with you.”
Both views are valid.. It depends on what you want.
💼 Career Decisions: Comfort or Courage?
Same goes for your job.
- You’ve built tenure
- You’re well-paid
- It’s comfortable
- But you feel stuck
Do you stay because of what you’ve already invested?
Or do you take the leap into something new, even if it’s risky?
Is there a right or wrong answer for sunk cost fallacy?
I believe it is a personal choice
Just a random thought after spending an hour watching a show.
What do you think?
