The market is finally picking up!
Hong Kong’s stock market is climbing again
IPOs are buzzing
Hiring demand is on the rise
It’s an exciting time and many of my candidates are getting interview invites from top-tier clients.
But with opportunity comes a lesson I want to share because timing really matters.
💡 Story 1: The 6PM Question
At a first-round interview, my candidate asked the hiring manager:
“Is OT required? Can I leave at 6PM sharp every day?”
The manager called me afterward and said,
“He came across as lazy like he’s already planning his exit before even joining.”
Was it a valid question?
Sure. Was it the right time to ask?
Probably not.
💡 Story 2: Title Talk Too Soon
Another candidate asked HR during her first interview:
“Is this a junior director role or senior director? I’m already a director.”
Now, titles vary across firms especially between American and Chinese banks.
At some Chinese banks, a Director can rank below DGM or even AVP.
HR’s feedback?
“Nicole, she seemed more focused on title than the actual job scope.”
Again, a fair concern but the timing made it feel off.
🎯 The Takeaway
Asking questions is important. But how and when you ask them can shape how you're perceived.
Let's practise to ask questions at a better manner and right timing!
