Yesterday, over coffee with a new candidate, I had one of those moments that I felt shocked and guilty.
My new candidate was exploring new opportunities
So we went through her interview history and past offers.
Then she casually mentioned a company she’d received an offer from — one I recognised immediately.
It was the same client where I placed my other candidate one year ago.
He just passed his one year work anniversary, and we’re meeting next week to celebrate.
But here’s the twist:
She had rejected the offer.
And the role?
It was then offered to someone else — my candidate.
I was stunned.
The HR and hiring manager had told me he was their top choice.
But now, one year later, I learned he was actually second in line.
I felt… guilty.
Not because I did anything wrong, but because I celebrated a win that wasn’t quite what I thought it was.
And now I’m wondering — do I tell him?
Would it change how he feels about the role?
About himself?
Or is it better to let the past stay in the past?
This is the first time I’ve felt conflicted as a recruiter.
We’re often the bridge between people and possibilities — but sometimes, we’re also the keepers of uncomfortable truths.
